GGAS Hi-Tech Labs proudly participated in the International ISTA Workshop on Insect Detection in Seed Lots, hosted by GEVES, bringing together 30 experts from across the world to tackle one of the seed industry’s most pressing challenges—detecting insect pests in seed samples. As international regulations on seed trade tighten, the need for advanced detection methods has become critical for ensuring seed quality, biosecurity, and phytosanitary compliance.

Representing GGAS Hi-Tech Labs, Mr. Noman Ahmed, Executive Director & EC Member of APSA, engaged in crucial discussions on emerging threats, innovative detection techniques, and regulatory frameworks. As an ISTA-accredited laboratory and a licensed Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) station under the Department of Plant Protection (PPD), Pakistan, GGAS Hi-Tech Labs plays a crucial role in safe seed importation, pest risk mitigation, and upholding global quarantine standards.

Key Highlights of the Workshop:

Day 1: Experts presented the latest findings on insect pests in seed lots, sharing results from a special ISTA-funded project exploring multiple detection methods, including their effectiveness and applicability in routine seed testing.

Day 2: A hands-on session allowed participants to practically apply advanced detection techniques, including visual inspection, sieving, trap-based monitoring, and radiography. An entomology expert provided specialized training in insect identification, focusing on key pests such as bruchids and weevils—species with significant impact on seed health and trade.

Final Roundtable: The workshop concluded with a dynamic debate on the advantages, limitations, and future directions for improving insect detection in seed testing, setting the stage for further global collaboration.
